The first steps in logistics were taken by the earliest civilizations, with initial efforts to organize the transport of goods and people.

Military applications were its first major purpose. The level of organization of ancient military logistics is impressive when one considers the scale of armies, the long periods of war, and the limitations of technology. It was not just about moving soldiers, but about supplying armies and campaigns, within and beyond borders. In Greek and Roman armies, there were even officers with the title of “Logistikas,” responsible for this activity.

This is how nations such as ancient Mesopotamia, China, Egypt, and Greece began to seek the best ways to move their armies and expand their trade. They used ships, pack animals, and carts, established strategic routes, and built warehouses. Later, the Roman Empire built its famous network of roads, which remained in use for centuries. In the second century B.C., China created the legendary Silk Road, the main link between East and West for one thousand five hundred years.

When the medieval era began, there were already many well-established routes. Together with institutions such as guilds, markets, and castles, they formed part of systems of storage, transport, and distribution.

Innovations such as the invention of the compass or the refinement of the astrolabe and shipbuilding advanced the possibilities of maritime transport, and the Hanseatic League was created, one of the great symbols of international trade of the era.

In the 15th and 16th centuries, the Age of Discovery represented a decisive turning point. Trade routes and relations between nations on a global scale were reshaped. Thinking about logistics and large-scale organization began to become increasingly important.

The Industrial Revolution in the 17th and 18th centuries transformed society. Steam power revolutionized the means, speed, and costs of moving people and goods. By the beginning of the 20th century, central and western Europe and the eastern United States had the most advanced and extensive railway systems, and the logistics of maritime transport were beginning to take on the form we know today. The 1920s saw the start of commercial flights.

The two World Wars made highly destructive use of all this technology and greatly developed its potential, laying the foundation for organizational systems at an international scale that are still used today. These advances, together with political mechanisms such as the European Union, made possible and promoted an increasingly global market. Globalization expanded companies' potential customer and supplier base.
