1. By air

The newest of the transportation methods on this list is the formidable airplane, which has become such an everyday part of our world that we tend to forget what an extraordinary advance it was in twentieth-century technology.

For obvious reasons, this is a means of transport used only over long distances. It is also especially important in isolated areas of the planet that are difficult to reach by other means.

One of its great advantages is speed, so it is used in urgent cases. However, its use is very expensive, discouraging the shipment of heavy or bulky loads.

2. By sea

Following the most recent invention, we list the oldest: the old and romantic ship transport.

This is a form of freight transport that has never gone out of style, nor is it expected to do so anytime soon, due to the great advantages it offers. The great majority of international freight traffic is carried by sea. When you order an item that comes from abroad, it is very likely that it was shipped by boat.

In fact, a ship can carry a much greater volume and weight of cargo than an airplane, at lower prices. Its main disadvantage is its relative slowness.

3. By rail

One of the land transport modes, freight shipping by rail began at the start of the 19th century and remains relevant. This is the main way to send materials in large quantities (for example, coal) across large stretches of land.

Freight transport by rail has great advantages: it is organized and efficient, environmentally friendly and relatively cheap as well. Like the ship, the train has capacity for large loads and is not affected by congestion problems.

However, it has an obvious limitation, which concerns the tracks themselves. Building and maintaining rail lines is expensive, and the terrain must be suitable and relatively flat. Because of this, coverage is limited, as is flexibility.

4. By pipeline

By “pipeline,” we mean here the large pipes that are used to transfer natural gas and oil, that is, gas pipelines and oil pipelines. This is an instrument that has acquired enormous relevance in the modern world, due to the centrality of fossil fuels in the energy market.

Due to its great efficiency, there has been increasing investment in this field, despite concerns regarding the environment.

The use of gas pipelines and oil pipelines is, of course, limited to very specific types of industrial raw material, so they are not relevant to the average consumer or to the vast majority of companies.

5. By road

Road transport is by far the most versatile, which makes it usually the final means for delivering goods: items that make a journey by rail or aboard a ship are then taken to their final destination by car. And in the modern world, with the growth of online orders, the emphasis on last-mile distribution is greater than ever.

Road transport is relatively cheap and fast. However, it is subject to different kinds of risk, such as delays, damage to goods, operational errors and accidents.
