How to make your routine greener

One of our guiding principles at InPost is concern for sustainability. We believe this should be one of the priorities of the modern commercial world, and that practicing and encouraging our customers and partners to practice more eco-friendly habits is not only a matter of responsibility, but the right strategy for the future.

This article is about some habits through which all of us, as citizens, can contribute to environmental sustainability.

1. Saving water and energy

Reducing electricity consumption is a logical priority not only for the environmentally conscious citizen, but also for anyone who does not want to waste money. Fortunately, there are many small measures that can have a real impact, and which we have already covered in this blog.

For example, a study revealed that standby mode often accounts for 10% of many households' electricity bills. Instead, turn off appliances when you are not using them.

Well-known technologies that benefit the planet are renewable energies, LED light bulbs and efficient household appliances (today, it is easy to check the energy efficiency rating). Less well known is the fact that the microwave saves energy compared to the oven, and we do not always remember that preparing several meals at once saves not only energy but also time.

As for water, just one less minute in the shower can save 10 liters. Some devices, such as showerheads, can be more efficient in the way they use water than others. And make sure you are not washing clothes more often than necessary.

2. Avoiding the car

A simple tip, and one that is as good for nature as it is for your own well-being: walk more and use public transport.

3. Not wasting food

The amount of food thrown away every year is overwhelming: it is estimated to be around one third of all food produced. Pay attention to expiration dates and, at the supermarket, choose an item with a shorter date if you are going to consume it soon and it makes no difference to you.

Use leftovers, such as fruit peels, to create compost. If you have a garden, using it to grow edible plants is a pleasant and tasty activity.

4. Reusing

This word can have many meanings, the most common of which is recycling paper, glass, plastics and metal. But also buying recycled products when possible, making repairs instead of buying new products, and donating or selling things you no longer use and that may be useful to someone else.

5. More eco-friendly products

One of the important suggestions when you shop is to avoid using plastic packaging and bags. If possible, prefer recyclable or reusable packaging, and natural materials in clothing and furniture. Likewise, there are hygiene and cleaning products that are less polluting than others: avoid “microbeads”.

Choosing companies that value sustainability and social responsibility is also a positive contribution to the environment, as is supporting local commerce.
