10 Tips for Saving Energy at Home

Feb 26, 2024

Reducing electricity consumption in our homes is one of the great priorities not only for the environmentally conscious citizenenvironmentally conscious, but also for those who do not want to waste money.

Fortunately, there are many small measures that can have a real impact. These are 10 habits that can make a big difference.

Don't forget to also consult our article on how to be a more responsible consumer!

1. Turn off lights and appliances

We start with a very obvious point that, however, we sometimes neglect. Don't forget to turn off the lights when you leave a room and to switch off appliances when you finish using them.

2. Don't overuse “standby”

In the case of some devices, particularly televisions, it is easy to get used to using standby mode out of habit. Although it uses less energy than normal operating mode, standby still consumes energy. Get used to turning off all appliances completely.

3. Use LED bulbs

LED lights are a great innovation that makes it possible to save money and energy, being more durable and more efficient. An LED bulb can use 85% less energy than a conventional bulb.

4. Pay attention to the energy efficiency rating

Don't forget to check the energy efficiency rating when you buy an appliance. “A” is the highest, “B” is the second highest, and so on. The higher the rating, the less energy is needed for the same result, and the more you will save on your electricity bills at the end of the month.

5. Use the microwave

Here is a perhaps less intuitive tip. The microwave is extremely energy efficient, and it can be used to cook countless meals, not just to heat up ready-made dishes. Use it whenever possible instead of the oven. And still on the topic of food, preparing your meals in batches, instead of cooking every time you eat, is another good way to save energy.

6. Good insulation

Studies show that a huge part of household electricity consumption is due to temperature control: central heating, heaters, fans, air conditioning… However, small measures can help greatly reduce these expenses. Closing doors and windows is an obvious recommendation, but so is replacing window glass with double or triple glazing, which has a much greater ability to insulate heat as well as sound. Replacing seals and filling gaps in doors and windows can make a big difference, as can better insulating the roof and covering the floor with rugs or carpets. In summer, don't forget to close the curtains so the sun does not heat the house.

7. Use renewable energy sources

Solar panels are the most famous domestic source of alternative energy. If you have that possibility, consider installing some panels, which will lower your energy bill, especially in sunny months, and in the long term will make up for the initial investment. This, however, does not exhaust the options: for example, many homes are now heated through biomass combustion.

8. A programmable thermostat

A smart thermostat is not necessarily expensive and statistics show that it can help reduce energy consumption by 20 or 30 percent. These devices adapt to your habits: turning off the heating when it is not needed, turning it on before you arrive home, etc.

9. The refrigerator

The refrigerator is one of the appliances that accounts for the greatest energy consumption. Do not set the temperature any colder than strictly necessary. Replace the seals whenever they start to lose their effectiveness, or the appliance will begin to consume unnecessary energy.

10. Don't waste energy when washing clothes

As for the washing machine, use it only when it is full. Use an appropriate cycle. Also consider using cold water: generally, unless the clothes are very dirty, it is enough.

Saving the environment with out-of-home delivery

The transport sector is one of the major current environmental concerns. And of all phases of the transport process, the so-called last mile, or capillary distribution, of parcel delivery is a particularly serious source of pollution, in addition to inefficiencies, problems, and delays.

And yet, things do not have to be this way. InPost represents an alternative that is becoming increasingly popular and that, we believe, will become the model of the future. Out-of-home delivery is an approach that is not only immensely advantageous from an environmental point of view, but also cheap, efficient, and convenient.
